I know what you feel like. The other day, my friends '91 Eclipse GSX dusted me pretty good too. I gained really fast once I got into vtec in second gear however, he had my by 2-3 car lengths easy off the launch. From that point on, I was playing catch-up.
It's damn hard racing those all-wheel-drive cars.

Those DSM's can be pretty quick, especially off of the line.
You'll find that dollar for dollar, the DSM's will get you on the line, everytime, but there are some things you can do to help.
Get stiff springs. Don't slam the car though. This will help keep the front of the car from lifting up.
You can also try a limited slip. That will help too.
After that, 8psi will help, and if you can tune the detionation out and raise your timing, you'll find lower RPM's MUCH MUCH more responsive, which will help in 1st so you don't bog.

I never race off the line for that very reason...hate to say it, but unless you get a shitty driver, those cars are going to hand you your ass at a street light everytime! I don't care if you are running 10psi, physics works!!! Lure him on to the freeway like I do Z28's and T/A's

EXACTLY what ZEUS said
Thats the ticket
The 555R's will help some but won't make up for 4 wheels pulling and pushing at the same time in the same direction
Wouldn't it be cool if we had AWD? I was actually supposed to race a modded GSX this weekend but he went to an event out of state and I missed the street races. I will get him to first race from a stop then from a 25mph rolling start

A LSD will make up for a LOT of the problems, as well as good tires. My Kaaz has made for much better starts off of a light, there really is nothing like actual 2wd rather than that 1wd open dif we are cursed with. I agree though rolling starts are the way to go, like creaping away from the light, and when they jump on it, you do too. Hell from a 30 up you can run with much faster cars since you take the launch out of the equation.
